For High School Athletes to get noticed by colleges they have to initiate contact with coaches themselves!
In high school, I relied too heavily on my coach to get me recruited. Being a three-year varsity player, and starting both ways in football my junior and senior years, I thought my coach would help in the sports recruiting process. Little did I know that my coach did not have the time to contact coaches for me. After having received weekly letters from college coaches requesting game film, I mistakenly assumed that my high school coach would send out my film. When the coaches interested in me never received any of my game films, these college coaches assumed I wasn’t interested. Needless to say, I made the mistake of not marketing myself correctly to college coaches. Therefore, I ended up empty handed. It wasn’t for a lack of talent; I had the size, strength, speed, and ability to play college sports. The problem was I didn’t market myself correctly in the High School Recruiting process. Most importantly I didn’t market myself thoroughly. Meaning, my senior year I sent out over 75 letters to football programs across the country. The response was great. The requests from coaches wanting to view my game films kept coming. At the end of the day, I know that by not providing game film in a quick and efficient manner is what cost me.
Looking back at the recruiting process I learned that if you don’t initiate the contact yourself, and have a fast and reliable way to send game film to coaches, you will end up disappointed and wondering why you didn’t get any scholarship offers. You may have the grades, the talent, and the off the field attributes that every college coach wants in a player; but if coaches don’t know you exist, they won’t recruit you! Don’t miss the opportunities that are available for athletic scholarships, reach out and grab them. There are a lot of programs that need athletes, whether it’s a Div I, or a Junior College, there are a lot of opportunities out there, if you’re willing to go get them.
